The U.S. Defense Department on Monday denied that American forces had attacked Iran’s Kharg Island oil facility after President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video on Truth Social depicting the site in flames. The video appeared to show oil infrastructure burning from an aerial perspective and was accompanied by a message describing “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens,” signed “President DJT.”
A U.S. official said the attack shown in the video did not happen and that Kharg Island was not among the locations targeted overnight during renewed exchanges between American and Iranian forces. Iranian officials also rejected the depiction. Hamid Bovard, head of the National Iranian Oil Co., called Trump’s post “laughable” and said conditions on Kharg Island were “calm and appropriate.”
