Amazon Expands Health AI Assistant to Its Website and Mobile App

Amazon on Tuesday said it is expanding access to its AI-powered healthcare assistant, Health AI, to its main website and mobile app, broadening the tool beyond the One Medical app where it was previously available.

The assistant is designed to answer health questions, interpret medical records, help renew prescriptions and schedule appointments. Amazon said people do not need to be Prime subscribers or One Medical members to use the service.

Health AI can respond to general health questions without accessing personal records. If users choose to connect their health data, the assistant can analyze medical information such as lab results, diagnoses and prescriptions to provide more tailored responses.

Amazon said the system can also help users take action based on those insights. For example, Health AI can connect people to treatment options or link them with healthcare providers when professional care is needed.

The company said personal health information is handled within a HIPAA-compliant environment and that interactions are protected with encryption and access controls. Amazon also said it trains the assistant using “abstracted patterns without directly identifying information.” According to the company, this approach allows the system to learn from common health questions while keeping patient identities private.

If users decide to link their medical records, Amazon said the data connection happens through the Health Information Exchange, a nationwide network used to share patient medical data.

Health AI can also connect patients with One Medical providers, Amazon’s primary care service that it acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023. U.S. Prime members using the assistant can receive up to five free direct-message consultations with a One Medical provider for more than 30 common health conditions, including cold and flu, allergies, acid reflux, pink eye and urinary tract infections. Non-Prime users can access care through a pay-per-visit option.

Users can sign up for the service through the Amazon Health page and will receive an email when access becomes available. Once enabled, they can begin a conversation with Health AI by asking questions through Amazon.com or the Amazon app.

Amazon’s move comes as major AI companies push deeper into healthcare. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health in January, and Anthropic followed with Claude for Healthcare shortly after.
